WEBMASTER’S NOTE:

Frank Woodruff was kind enough to send this letter to me and I thought it was interesting enough to be posted as part of the Tortuga association’s history.
Frank also took the time to put the letter in type for easer reading...

Thanks Frank for sharing these important documents with us.

FIRST REUNION ATTEMPT...

E-mail from Frank Woodruff.

This is the first attempt at organizing a Tortuga Reunion in 1964. But it died from lack of interest. I put it in the VFW magazine and just a couple people were interested.
Maybe because most of us were just starting into our thirties and had no time for that sort of thing. Panter gave me this letter back at the Seattle Reunion.
Note the date and the price of the stamp on the envelope. They still had penny post cards at that time.

Duane,

Received your letter today and I will keep in close contact with you. And I will send you a report and address from time to time. Bill Fools lives just around the corner from me a couple of blocks that is. Dave Martin owns and operates the Lucky 7 (seven) in Temple City which is just a few miles from West Covina. Dave was our Baker aboard the Tortuga along with me and Leo.

Right now this whole program is just starting out. Right now I am searching for names and address’s. So if you have any pass them along to me and I will contact them.

If you don’t remember me Panter I was the Red headed Baker but I left the Tortuga late in “53“.

I can remember you. If my memory is right your shorter than I am, a tatoo on your arm and a scar on your cheek. If you’ll remember my home state is “Kansas, Topeka”.

Right now I am Senior Vice Commander of V.F.W. 8620. We have been promised the Hall at our Post which has a cap. of 750 seven hundred and fifty persons. We also have two bars which if we desire will be open. I have a mimeograph machine at my use.

A couple of days before receiving your letter, I received a letter from a John Paul Skeens from Holden West Va. Box 119. I can’t remember him but he is also asking for more information. He might have been aboard the Tortuga between 1945 and 1947 when it was commissioned before.

I have another address from Jim Sutter 1011 Howe St Dallas Oregan but I don’t know how good it is. It was given to me by my brother Alvin Woodruff. Alvin was on the Tortuga when we first went over sea’s.

If you can pass along Craigs and Horn’s address I would sure appreciate it. Horn might remember me when I was in 2 Div. Before I became a Baker.

A reunion will depend on you guys. It might be wise to plan far enough ahead so that everyone can plan their vacation. I believe I can get Roe’s address from Bill but if you have it, send it along to me just to make sure. Use their full names if you have them. See you some time, I will pass along information

By the way
What Post do you
belong to?

Take it Easy.
